Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT)
The Information Technology Program (DAY/EVENING PROGRAM)
Information Technology is one of the five computing disciplines. The other computing disciplines are Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems and Software Engineering. Broadly, Information Technology as an academic discipline satisfy human needs that arise from computing technology. As such, Information Technology ensures that the human that use the technology get maximum utility from it. Likewise, the technology, in serving the human needs has to be convenient to the human. The core of Information Technology encompasses knowledge areas that include Information Technology, Fundamentals, Human Computer Interaction, Information Assurance and Security, Information Management, Integrative Programming & Technologies, Mathematics and Statistics for IT, Networking, Programming Fundamentals, Platform Technologies, System Administration and Maintenance, System Integration and Architecture, Social and Professional Issues and Web Systems and Technologies. Much as all countries want Information Technology in their quest for computerization, the focus depends on the level of computerization and the trends in that country. This program therefore will focus on the knowledge areas that address the current and future IT needs of Uganda.
Focus of the program
The focus of the program is derived in the current trends in Uganda. Uganda is a developing country and as such, many organizations are in the process of computerization. The early phase of computerization is characterized by changing of ways of doing things: From manual to electronic. As such, qualified personnel are required to manage information in the organizations and to manage the networked system. Quite often, systems are acquired in a phased way. There is therefore a need for qualified personnel to integrate them as and when they are acquired. Likewise, due to the universality of the web, most systems are web-based. As such, there is a need for qualified personnel in web systems and technologies. The niche of this program is therefore in:
Information Management
Integrative Programming & Technologies
Networking
System Administration and Maintenance
System Integration and Architecture
Web Systems and Technologies
Other areas of Information Technology will be covered to a moderate extent since their knowledge is, to some extent, necessary for the focus/niche of the program. The extent of coverage will be that necessary for the focus of the program. The program will also
impart soft skills like computer Literacy, communication/writing skills, etc. Another niche in the program is in delivery. As much as possible, students are to take a central role in the study process. Likewise, evaluation is to be done in such a way that the student demonstrates masterly and synthesis of the subject matter. Recall will have a very little extent of contribution.1.3. The Objectives of the Proposed Program The objectives of the program is to produce graduates with theoretical and practical skills in information technology geared at addressing the common IT skill needs in Uganda specifically in:
- Information/Data Management
- Network Management
- System Integration
- System administration and
- Web Systems
Expected Graduates
The expected Graduates from the program are expected to work as:
- Information/Data Administrators
- Network Administrators
- System Administrators
- System Analysts
- Web Administrators/Developers
Due to the courses in the program like entrepreneurship, business communication,
marketing, human resource management, and others, graduates can also work in tailor
made positions in IT and IT related organizations.
The Program
Target Group
The program targets A-level leavers and Diploma holders. A-level leavers must have two principal passes at the same sitting as well as satisfying the entry requirements for the program which may change from time to time. Diploma holders must have at least a credit diploma from an institution recognized by the Uganda National Council for higher education. For Diplomas closely related to Information Technology, credit transfer can be applied for by the student.
Nature of the Program
The program is a full time program that can be offered during the day or in the evening.
Tuition
The tuition fees of the program is ********* for Ugandan students and ******* for
international students.
Duration of the Program
The duration of the program shall be three academic years consisting of six semesters
and two recess terms. Each semester lasts seventeen (17) weeks two of which are for
examinations. Each recess term is 10 weeks.
Program Regulations
