Master of Science in Procurement and Logistics Management

Justification

The world of work has increasingly become very competitive both at national and international level. Employers are increasingly looking out for workers with the ability to make multi-disciplinary decisions. Organizations are looking out for employees who can easily adapt to non-structured and constantly changing situations which this program intends to impact to candidates. The program shall therefore look forward for a complete re-skilling of the human resource to cope up with the changing demands. Procurement and logistics management has become an issue of great concern both in the government and private arena and therefore professionals at higher level are required to provide guidance.
This program is an all-round business management qualification that ultimately focuses on the growing dynamism of businesses both nationally and globally. It is designed to respond to the urgent need of enhancing the managerial skills and knowledge of the people involved in designing and implementing policies to enhance competitiveness within organizations. Such managerial skills are becoming a necessity for modern business management in Uganda and worldwide.
This program is to be an answer to the current demands by the Ugandan Public service which is also in line with the National Development Plan (NDP).

Target Group and time of lecture delivery

The programme shall target persons with at least a good first-degree in any discipline or graduates of a Postgraduate Diploma from TU or from a recognized institution where transfer of credit is possible.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The overall objective of the programme shall be to train and equip its graduates with adequate knowledge that will enable them to:
a) Develop analytical-decision making skills so that he/she can be able to identify and diagnose problems, formulate alternative solutions and make rational and ethical decisions.
b) Promote leadership skills so as to successfully communicate and interact with diverse stakeholders
c) Gain competencies to meet the work place challenges and demands of the contemporary business world.
d) Develop appropriate systems and Management practices effective in the socio-economic and cultural context.
e) Become proactive managers capable of using relevant technology
f) Undertake and supervise and spearhead Organizational-problem based research in field of management

Specific Objectives
By the end of the programme the students should be able to:
a) Apply the modern purchasing principles and best business practices
b) Interpret and advise on strategic management of supplier relationships.
c) Analyse and appreciate costs associated with inventory investment.
d) Design, manage and implement procurement strategies for private and public businesses.
e) Identify and appreciate the challenges involved in national and international sector environments.
f) Undertake organizational-problem based research
g) Develop a comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques applicable to supply chain analysis

Learning outcomes for Procurement & Logistics Management

Participants will discover how to identify purposeful procurement and contract management requirements, contribute to rational contractor/supplier selection, conduct contracting and procurement activities as well as finalizing activities for the projects they shall be engaged into having attained a strong foundation of the theory and exposure to practical procurement aspects.

GENERAL REGULATIONS

1 General regulations governing academic programmes of TIBM shall apply.
2 In addition, the special regulations governing higher degrees shall govern the programme.
3 The programme shall be by coursework and dissertation.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the Programme shall be done in accordance with TIBM post graduate admissions regulations
A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the programme on possession of:
a) A first degree of at least a lower second in any field or
b) A Postgraduate Diploma from TIBM or from a recognized institution where transfer of credit is possible.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAM

The programme shall be two academic years lasting for four (4) semesters. First year of study will mainly be composed course while second year of study shall be composed three core courses in the first semester and dissertation in the second semester. In the same second year, a student is expected to write and submit a dissertation under the guidance of the supervisors on a problem based research in the area of specialisation following procedures as set by the department of higher degrees. The students shall present the research project and defend it.

 Dissertation

Well as MSC PLM world over has a strong practical problem solving focus, we are also cognisant of the fact that many students in the world of research and academia are increasingly opting for it. The students under this program, while maintaining its core focus of practicability and problem solving will also undergo a higher level of rigorous research involvement. The student will write a dissertation (being a more academically rigorous research that prepare participants to the academic world of research) or a problem based research project in organizations of their choice, through identification of real-life problems and working out practical solutions with the management of those organizations (hinged on the practical problem solving in procurement and logistics management).
Two promoters shall supervise this paper, one shall be academic (preferably a lecturer from TU) and the other work based Supervisor.
All students shall carry out supervised research in accordance with the general regulations governing postgraduate programmes and special departmental regulations for Masters Degree at TU.
